The work of the archaeologist is not just that of the archaeological excavation on the site. Equally compelling and important for the provision of the historical framework of a site is \u201cthe excavation\u201d in the sources, or the research and analysis of all those sources (literary, toponymic, etc.) that explicitly tells us more about the local reality, of the site itself, and of the local territory. In this case, students are required to learn how to carry out a bibliographic research among the ancient authors of different ages too, to read,\u00a0 <\/span>to translate, and to interpret their works to provide a framework of information clear, complete and detailed as possible, in order to compare them to the information from the excavation and the study of the materials.<\/p>\n

The workshop entails two phases:<\/p>\n

In the first theoretical phase, which will take place in classroom, the archaeologist will show the archaeological site of La Cuma, the archaeological excavation, the main methodologies of historical research, and the importance of the sources and the knowledge of the ancient authors.<\/p>\n

This will be followed by the guided tour of the archaeological site, and then by the research work in library (in the school library if possible or in a public library), and the translation of the main ancient sources related to Monte Rinaldo or to Fermo\u2019s territory during the Roman age. The entire work will be supervised by an operator and the involved teachers. The research work, which can be done in work groups of 4\/5 students, can become a paper on the history of the local territory.<\/p>\n

Preferably intended for classical and scientific high schools.<\/p>\n
